Weert-Jan Weerts
Amstelvener Weert-Jan Weerts is benoemd tot Lid in de Orde van Oranje Nassau voor zijn aandeel in de strijd tegen de ziekte Amyotrofische Laterale Sclerose (ALS). Loco-burgemeester Herbert Raat reikte hem zaterdagavond tijdens een gala in het Noordwijk de bij de Koninklijke onderscheiding behorende versierselen uit. Bij Weerts zelf werd ALS geconstateerd in 2006, een ernstige zenuwaandoening, die leidt tot uitvallen van (uiteindelijk) alle spieren. “In plaats van bij de pakken neer te gaan zitten is hij aan de slag gegaan om meer bekendheid te geven aan deze vreselijke ziekte,” zegt Raat. ‘Dat vergroot de kans op fondsen om wetenschappelijk onderzoek uit te breiden, zodat snellere ontwikkeling van een medicijn mogelijk wordt.” Al tweemaal kon hij, dankzij slim netwerken, in de TV show van Ivo Niehe aandacht vragen voor de ziekte. Mede dankzij hem kon de Stichting ALS in drie jaar haar begroting verviervoudigen. Onder meer worden gala’s en wielertochten georganiseerd.
De Stichting heeft, mede door toedoen van Weerts, internationale samenwerking kunnen initiëren tussen onderzoekscentra in vijftien Europese landen. Raat op zijn weblog: “Weert-Jan Weerts zal er persoonlijk waarschijnlijk geen baat meer bij hebben. Dat maakt hem voor mij een held. Hopelijk komt voor anderen die de ziekte krijgen een medicijn beschikbaar. Dat is er dan mede die mede gekomen door Weert-Jan Weerts inspanningen.”
